International Premiere: Toronto Fringe Festival

At the beginning of last year, I applied to be in a theatre festival in Toronto, but my application was denied. At the time, I was disappointed, but I know that rejection is always God’s way of saying, “I have something bigger and better for you.” Periodically, I would look for solo theatre festival applications, and in November of 2016, I found the Toronto Fringe Festival application. All shows at the Fringe are chosen randomly by lottery. Each year, the festival receives approximately 700 applications. One thing that stood out to me on their website was this phrase: "We will never intervene in the artistic content of participating productions. These are your stories; this is your art."

Ever since I openly came out about my anxiety struggles, God has opened so many doors for me to perform my solo show. This festival is giving me the opportunity to self-produce 7 shows. It has forced me to finally get my passport (which I stood in line for at the post office for 5 hours) and to learn the business side of working in another country.

I don't know anyone in Toronto, and I'm not sure how many people will attend each one of my shows, but I know that I will show up and give it my all each night. I know that I will explore the city of Toronto as a tourist and see other shows in festivals. I know that I will meet people from all over the world coming together to share our love for theatre! I never played the lottery before, but after this whole experience, I will be rich with new experiences in a place I have never been.
